info
1. Brush Blast - Knocking of loose paint or flaking finishes in order apply a new top coat for aesthetics purposes.
2. Commercial Blast - This is taking nearly all the top finish away leaving whatever may be stuck in cracks or crevices that wouldn't cause a new finish to fail anyway. Like cinderblock buildings, line stripes that are going back down in the same spot, etc.
3. Near White - All finish is removed leaving behind some of the mill scale or some other substance that is part of the substrate itself. Like "E-Coat" on vehicles or mill scale on commercial vehicles or industrial equipment for example.
4. White Metal - This means every square inch of paint or finish is remove all the way down to a uniform white metal surface. This is how most car restorations should be done or any substrate getting re-coated by electrolysis or some other special process.
We try to always talk it over first with our customers and set the expectations correctly and come to an agreement on what finish we are going to be leaving them and charge accordingly. There is no reason to blast a dumpster the same way you would a car when the paint will be beat up in a week anyway. No reason to take a commercial truck frame all the way down to white metal when they are just trying to make it look new to sell it. As long as the customer understands the finish levels we can offer and we charge you based on that, you can't loose.
Again, I'm always available to help decide what be most valuable to you and what finish level the customer needs for resurfacing.
There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to remove a coating. The deciding factors would be speed and end result of the substrate you are stripping. Understanding the impact of different abrasives will help in deciding the best media for the job. The following chart will explain the characteristics of various media types.
Abrasive Type Bulk Density Hardness Mohs Scale Shape
Crushed Glass 75 lbs/ft 3 6 Angular
Blast Sand 100 lbs/f t3 7 Angular
Garnet 145 lbs/ft 3 7-7.5 Angular
Glass Bead 75 lbs/ft 3 6 Round
Walnut Shell 35 lbs/ft 3 3 Angular
Soda Bicarbonate 61 lbs/ft 3 2.5 Angular
Abrasive Type
Coal Slag
Sugar Sand
Choosing an abrasive is like choosing sandpaper for a project. More coarse sandpaper like 60 grit or 100 grit will strip quicker and have a rougher surface while finer mesh like 400 or 1000 grit will be slower and have a smoother finish. Finer meshed abrasives are great for softer substrates like fiberglass, concrete and wood, while larger mesh abrasives work best for thick steel or thick coatings.
To sum it up, 40/70 crushed glass is a great general, all around blasting abrasive. If crushed glass is struggling to remove a coating then we switch to a heavier abrasive like garnet which will work better. We determine what abrasive the substrate can handle and the thickness or toughness of the coating we are stripping.
